National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has called for the removal of the Electoral Commission (EC) led by Jean Mensa, citing a series of unresolved electoral issues and alleged infractions.

Speaking during an appearance on Maakye on Onua TV on Wednesday, June 11, Asiedu Nketia stated that the EC is “not fit for purpose” in its current state. He stressed that he would persist in efforts to have the Commission removed until a formal petition is filed to trigger the constitutional process.

He pointed to the failure of the Commission to conduct elections in the Guan Constituency during the 2020 general elections, which left the people of Santrofi, Akpafu, Lolobi, and Likpe (SALL) without parliamentary representation for four years. Representation was restored only after the 2024 elections, when Fred Agbenyo was elected.

The NDC Chairman also criticized what he described as procedural inconsistencies in the Ablekuma North parliamentary elections and questioned the EC’s transparency in election administration, citing irregularities from the Volta Region to the Greater Accra Region.

“You can’t even declare results,” he said, suggesting a breakdown in electoral processes.

Asiedu Nketia argued that election stalemates are not caused by flaws in the electoral system itself, but by deliberate actions that violate the law.

“If you have well-meaning people who want to really play by the rules, you can,” he said. “No results can end in a stalemate unless someone uses their power in a manner inconsistent with the law.”

He concluded by emphasizing that the credibility of Ghana’s electoral process depends on a Commission that is professional, impartial, and committed to upholding electoral laws.
