Ashanti Region: One Dead, Three Injured in Galamsey Pit Collapse

A tragic incident occurred on Monday, December 16, 2024, at Nkonteng near Nkawie in the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality of the Ashanti Region, where a 23-year-old man lost his life, and three others sustained injuries following the collapse of an illegal mining pit, commonly known as galamsey.

The deceased, identified as Osei Kwabena from Offinso, was trapped under the debris and could not be rescued in time. The three injured individuals were saved and are currently receiving medical care at the Nkawie Government Hospital.

The body of the deceased has since been transferred to the morgue. Koyim Mahama Iddrisu, the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), confirmed the incident to Citi News.

He explained, “One good citizen called me that a galamsey pit had collapsed on four people. They managed to save three, but the fourth person was trapped under the rubble, and when he was removed, he was already dead.”

The injured victims remain under observation at the hospital as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the collapse.

The incident underscores ongoing concerns about illegal mining activities in Ghana, which continue to pose significant risks to lives and the environment.
