A tragic mining accident has claimed the lives of five illegal miners in Mpasatia, located in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region. The miners lost their lives when a pit they were digging for gold suddenly collapsed, burying several others under heaps of sand.

The incident, which occurred on April 1, 2025, has left rescue teams racing against time to retrieve those still trapped underground. So far, two of the deceased miners have been recovered and confirmed dead at the Afari Hospital, while three others were retrieved lifeless at the disaster scene. The bodies of the five victims have been deposited at the morgue, awaiting identification by their families.

According to eyewitnesses, the collapse caused chaos as concerned residents and security agencies rushed to the site in a desperate effort to rescue the remaining trapped miners. However, their efforts have been hampered by the unstable nature of the pit and the massive volume of sand covering the victims.

Speaking to reporters, a local resident, Nana Nkansah, described the situation as dire. “People are working tirelessly to remove the trapped miners, but it’s extremely difficult because of the amount of debris,” he said.

Illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey,” has long been a major concern in Ghana, posing significant environmental and human safety risks. Despite government efforts to curb the practice, many unregulated mining activities continue to operate, leading to frequent accidents such as this one.
