
Two people, including an Assembly Member, have been killed in violent clashes between residents of Mpatuam and military officers in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region.
The confrontations, which occurred on Monday and Tuesday, have heightened tensions in the community. The exact cause of the disturbances remains unclear.
Reports indicate the clashes began when soldiers confronted residents allegedly attempting to invade one of the mining concessions belonging to Asanko Gold.
Speaking to Citi News, the Assembly Member for the Mpatuam West Electoral Area, Sekyi Michael, confirmed that one person was killed during Monday’s incident.
He added that the military returned on Tuesday, leading to another confrontation in which an Assembly Member lost his life.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
