Traditional Chiefs in the Ashanti Kingdom are advocating that Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu should impose a ban on New Patriotic Party (NPP) campaign activities within the Ashanti Region until they produce Chairman Wontumi. Expressing discontent with alleged disrespectful remarks made by Chairman Wontumi, these chiefs are also calling for the closure of his media entity by the Chief of Bantama.
During a meeting between party executives and Ashanti Kingdom Chiefs, one chief emphasized, “I want the Bantamahene to close down his radio station. Also, I believe that it is important that the NPP be banned from campaigning in the Ashanti Region if they do not produce Wontumi.”
The Chiefs argue that the Ashanti Region, a stronghold for the NPP, deserves better treatment and respect. Chairman Wontumi has faced criticism for reportedly making offensive comments about the King of the Ashanti Kingdom during the political party’s parliamentary vetting.
Scheduled to meet Manhyia on January 22, 2024, Chairman Wontumi was unable to attend due to health reasons. The Chiefs have set a deadline of January 29, 2024, for him to appear before them, intensifying pressure on the controversial regional chairman.
