Tensions have escalated at the Adjen Kotoku onion market in Accra after armed men reportedly stormed the facility in an attempt to seize control, raising serious concerns about trader safety and food supply stability.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, April 6, 2026, is believed to be linked to an ongoing dispute between rival factions over the management and operations of the market. Reports suggest that the situation may also involve elements of political interference, further complicating efforts to restore order.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the armed individuals forcefully entered the market, causing panic among traders and disrupting normal business activities. Many traders fled the scene, fearing for their safety as tensions quickly escalated.
Speaking to Citi News, spokesperson for the Onion Sellers Association, Mustapha Sulemana Talimu, called for immediate government intervention to prevent the situation from spiralling out of control.
“As I speak, they are with guns… they said they don’t want anybody in the market,” he said, highlighting the level of intimidation faced by traders.
The unrest comes at a time when the onion supply chain is already under pressure. Reports indicate that trucks transporting onions into Ghana have been blocked in Nigeria, allegedly as a retaliatory measure linked to earlier disputes involving Ghanaian traders.
This dual challenge—internal conflict and external supply disruptions—has heightened fears of a potential shortage of onions in local markets, which could drive up prices and affect consumers nationwide.
Traders are now appealing to security agencies and government authorities to intervene swiftly, restore calm, and ensure the protection of lives and property at the market.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident, but there are growing calls for a long-term resolution to the recurring disputes that continue to threaten the stability of one of Accra’s key food distribution hubs.
