Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has reiterated his unwavering commitment to ensuring the passage of Ghana’s Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, emphasizing its alignment with the nation’s cultural values and moral principles. Addressing a Ghanaian community in Côte d’Ivoire on January 21, Bagbin declared his staunch opposition to same-sex relationships, asserting that he would rather sacrifice his life than accept such practices in Ghanaian society.

The Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, has sparked widespread debate in Ghana. Proponents argue that it safeguards Ghanaian traditions, while critics contend it infringes on human rights. Despite the controversy, Bagbin remains resolute, expressing hope for the bill’s passage within the year.

“I am determined to see this through, even if it comes at great personal cost. Upholding moral principles is non-negotiable,” Bagbin stated during an open forum.

He criticized former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for refusing to sign the bill into law, calling the decision unconstitutional. Bagbin emphasized that Parliament, not the President, holds the authority to enact laws and warned against any similar actions in the future.

In addition to his stance on the LGBTQ+ bill, Bagbin pledged to hold the executive branch accountable for its promises. He highlighted specific commitments, such as the establishment of a women’s bank to provide low-interest credit.

“We will not allow the executive to backtrack on its promises. Governance is about delivering results, not just making declarations,” he said.

Bagbin also criticized excessive cabinet sizes, stating that the maximum allowable number of ministers is 60. He vowed to monitor the government closely to ensure compliance with this limit, underscoring his commitment to effective and transparent governance.

Bagbin urged Ghanaians to remain vigilant in holding leaders accountable, emphasizing the importance of active engagement beyond election periods. “This is how we ensure effective governance. We mean business, and we expect the government to do the same,” he concluded.
