Former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has praised his successor, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, for abolishing the controversial E-Levy and betting tax, which were introduced by the previous administration.
Dr. Forson announced the tax removals in the 2025 budget statement presented on March 11, citing the need to ease the financial burden on Ghanaians. The move has been widely welcomed by many, including Dr. Amin Adam, who acknowledged the positive impact on citizens.
However, in an interview on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV, Dr. Amin Adam also expressed concerns about the substantial hike in the Growth and Sustainability Levy on mining companies, which has increased from 1% to 3%.
“I think that he has delivered, but I think that he has also imposed additional taxes. For example, the Growth and Sustainability Levy increased by 200% from 1% to 3%. If the sector that gives you growth is the sector that you are heavily taxing more, then what kind of economics are you doing?” he questioned.
While acknowledging the need to tax the extractive industry, he cautioned against overburdening a sector that plays a crucial role in Ghana’s economic growth.
