The fierce Tripoli Derby between Libyan football rivals Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahli Tripoli was abandoned in the 39th minute on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, after violent chaos erupted both on and off the pitch.
Trouble began when Al-Ahli fans stormed the field in protest of Al-Ittihad’s opening goal, triggering a breakdown in order. In the mayhem, Portuguese referee Fábio José Costa was injured by a protesting substitute and refused to continue the match, forcing officials and players to flee for safety.
The unrest extended beyond the stadium as riots broke out, with Al-Ahli fans setting fire to Al-Ittihad’s team bus and a police vehicle. Security personnel came under attack as order collapsed around the venue.
The Libyan Football Federation is expected to investigate the incident, which has raised serious concerns about crowd control and security at major football fixtures in the country.
