The High Court in Koforidua, located in the Eastern Region, has ruled against Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, on charges of contempt.
The verdict stems from Kumi’s failure to comply with a court order that temporarily prohibited him from assuming his role as an MP.
Justice Senyo Amedahe, who presided over the case, also issued a bench warrant for the lawmaker’s arrest due to his failure to appear in court for sentencing.
Earlier, the court had directed Kumi to refrain from participating in the swearing-in ceremony in Parliament while legal proceedings were ongoing. However, disregarding this directive, he proceeded to take the oath of office.
After examining clear evidence of his deliberate non-compliance, the court determined that Kumi had committed an act of contempt.
The Minority Caucus in Parliament attempted to defend his absence by submitting an official communication, but Justice Amedahe dismissed their justification, maintaining that Kumi had shown clear disregard for the authority of the court.
