Akufo-Addo to Announce Major Ministerial Reshuffle Today; Ofori-Atta, Agyemang-Manu Likely to Be Replaced

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to unveil a significant shake-up in his government today, Wednesday, February 14th, 2024. This reshuffle, the most substantial since he assumed office in January 2017, comes with just ten months left before the 2024 polls.

Pressure has mounted on the government to cut spending following a bailout request to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to stabilize the economy. Calls for a reshuffle have grown, with the General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, urging weary ministers to resign.

Sources suggest the reshuffle will affect key ministers, including Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang-Manu. Ofori-Atta faced criticism in October 2022 for his economic management, with Mohammed Amin Adam, Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, likely to replace him.

Meanwhile, Bernard Okoe Boye, former Deputy Health Minister, is tipped to take over from Agyemang-Manu, who has faced scrutiny over his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other changes include Dan Botwe leaving the Local Government Ministry for a role in the 2024 NPP Presidential campaign, with Martin Adjei Korsah set to take his place. Roads and Highways Minister Kwasi Amoako-Atta is expected to step down, with Francis Asenso-Boakye, the current Works and Housing Minister, likely to replace him.
