Former Ghana international Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has publicly apologized for his earlier support of Otto Addo’s re-appointment as head coach of the Black Stars. The 33-year-old had been vocal in backing Addo to take charge of the national team after Chris Hughton was sacked.
However, seven months into Otto Addo’s second stint as coach, the Black Stars have struggled under his leadership. Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are now in jeopardy, following a disappointing run in the qualifiers, which has left them in third place with just two points from four matches, behind Angola and Sudan.
In an interview after Ghana’s recent 2-0 defeat to Sudan, Agyemang-Badu expressed regret for his role in supporting Addo’s return.
“I apologise [as I was part] of those who advocated for the second coming of coach Otto Addo. If you go into my interviews, I gave him massive support but I’m sorry,” Agyemang-Badu told Onua TV. “It seems the task is beyond him.”
Since his appointment in March 2024, Otto Addo has overseen only two victories, with three losses and three draws in his eight matches in charge. The recent defeat to Sudan has intensified pressure on the Black Stars, who must now win their remaining two games in the AFCON qualifiers and hope Sudan drops points to secure a spot in next year’s tournament in Morocco.
