Ghanaian journalist and tourism ambassador, Afua Asantewaa Aduonum, has had her second attempt at the Guinness World Record for the longest individual singing marathon disqualified due to technical violations of the organization’s guidelines.
In an official communication from Guinness World Records, it was revealed that Afua’s attempt was rendered invalid because she exceeded her allocated rest breaks. According to the organization’s rules, claimants are allowed five minutes of rest for every hour of completed activity. However, Afua took a 15-minute break during Sequence 19 when she was entitled to only five minutes, and later took a 105-minute break during Sequence 21 while having only 10 minutes of accrued rest time. These discrepancies led to the disqualification of the attempt.
“We can only approve a record when all of the rules have been followed, as that is how we ensure fairness across all record attempts,” the Guinness team stated.
Afua, in a press release issued through Askof Productions, described the journey as “challenging yet rewarding.” While expressing disappointment over the disqualification, she reflected on the experience as one filled with growth, discovery, and development.
“This journey has significantly shaped my being,” she stated, adding her heartfelt gratitude to her sponsors, supporters, and the general public for their belief and encouragement.
The release also acknowledged institutions and personalities including Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, Ike’s Cultural Village, the Ashanti Region Police, and several corporate sponsors for their roles in making the attempt possible.
Despite two unsuccessful attempts, Afua remains undeterred. “We will continue to make steady progress,” she assured her followers.
Her first attempt, held in December 2023, also failed to meet the criteria for a valid record but sparked nationwide support and admiration..
