In a recent development, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called upon the Electoral Commission (EC) to create a contingency plan to address the numerous challenges affecting the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.
The registration process has encountered significant difficulties, resulting in many individuals being unable to register. Afenyo-Markin, after visiting a voter registration center, highlighted the necessity for the EC to establish a backup plan to ensure that all eligible voters are registered before the exercise concludes.
Afenyo-Markin stated, “The Electoral Commission must enhance its registration system. If we are consistently facing network failures, it is doubtful that they will meet the deadline. The frustrations and delays need to be resolved.”
He continued, “I urge the Electoral Commission to have a backup system in place because the current frustrations are too frequent. I encourage the Electoral Commission to meet the expectations of the public.”
In light of the challenges faced, other individuals, including the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) running mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, have suggested extending the registration deadline to compensate for lost time due to technical and network issues.
Additionally, President Akufo-Addo has urged all eligible voters to register to enhance Ghana’s democratic process.
