The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has apologised to the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, and withdrawn allegations of fraud in the ongoing security service recruitment process.
The retraction follows a directive by the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, who referred the Minority Leader to the Privileges Committee over possible contempt after the Interior Minister accused him of making unsubstantiated claims.
Mr Afenyo-Markin had earlier alleged that the engagement of a third-party IT firm in the recruitment exercise amounted to a scam and imposed excessive financial costs on applicants.
However, during parliamentary proceedings on Wednesday, March 4, he formally withdrew his comments and expressed regret, stating that he had no intention of tarnishing the Minister’s reputation and would channel future concerns appropriately.
In response, Mr Muntaka accepted the apology but described the allegations as deeply painful, noting that being wrongly accused of serious wrongdoing was distressing. He further appealed for the remarks to be expunged from parliamentary records.
