Alfred Ababio Kumi, widely known as Adenta Kumi and a former parliamentary candidate for the Adenta constituency on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reportedly been arrested in a dawn operation by armed men believed to be operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, confirmed the incident via Facebook on Friday, May 23, describing it as a disturbing and forceful arrest. According to him, Kumi was taken from his home around 4:00 a.m. by eight men, six of whom were masked and armed with AK-47 rifles, while two others were in plain clothes.
“These Rambo-style actions by government continue to raise concerns that bother on free speech and good governance,” the MP wrote, using the hashtag #FreeAdentaKumiNow.
Kumi’s family also confirmed the arrest to Citi News, saying it was carried out by heavily armed individuals believed to be from the NIB. So far, no official statement has been issued by the Bureau or the Ministry of National Security regarding the motive behind the raid.
The arrest comes days after Kumi submitted a petition to President John Dramani Mahama, calling for the dissolution of a committee probing the removal of the Chief Justice. He cited potential misconduct, alleging that some members of the committee, Justices Pwamang, Adibu-Asiedu, and Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi were seen dining with lawyer Thaddeus Sory, counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori, allegedly discussing matters related to the petition.
