The Accra Sports Stadium, a hub for entertainment events, has been left in a dire condition following Stonebwoy’s highly anticipated BHIM Concert held on December 22, 2023. Despite the concert’s success in filling the 40,000-capacity stadium and thrilling attendees with stellar performances, the aftermath has taken a toll on the stadium’s pitch.
Distressing videos surfaced post-concert, revealing bikers recklessly drifting across the stadium’s turf, causing substantial damage to the grass. The footage portrays a devastating sight, depicting the once-vibrant green pitch now appearing pale and grey, signaling the extent of the damage incurred during the musical event.
This unfortunate turn of events comes after the Accra Sports Stadium’s previous utilization for a football match featuring the Black Queens against Namibia on December 1, 2023, marking its last sporting event. Subsequently, the National Sports Authority (NSA) announced the closure of the stadium for football-related activities in December, opting to rent it out for Christmas concerts.
In an official statement signed by the NSA’s Director General, Prof. Peter Twumasi, it was declared that the Accra Sports Stadium would remain unavailable for sporting purposes throughout December. The directive urged clubs accustomed to using the stadium to seek alternative venues for their league matches during this period.
Consequently, the state of the stadium’s pitch has led Ghana Premier League clubs such as Hearts of Oak, Accra Great Olympics, Accra Lions, and Dreams FC to seek alternative locations to host their home games. The unfortunate aftermath of the BHIM Concert has spurred concerns and prompted these clubs to swiftly secure alternative venues to ensure the continuity of their league matches.
