Accra Sports Stadium Closes Down for Christmas Shows, Clubs Asked Seek New Venues for Matches

The Accra Sports Stadium is set to undergo a temporary closure during December as the National Sports Authority (NSA) plans to rent out the venue for Christmas concerts, impacting the home games of several Ghana Premier League clubs including Hearts of Oak, Accra Great Olympics, Accra Lions, and Dreams FC. The NSA, through its Director General, Prof. Peter Twumasi, issued a statement informing clubs of the stadium’s unavailability for sporting events throughout the month, urging them to seek alternative venues for their league matches.

This decision has drawn criticism, especially from journalist Fentuo Tahiru, who expressed concerns about the stadium’s closure for concerts, predicting potential issues such as electricity bills going unpaid and the stadium’s pitch deteriorating as a consequence.

The move follows Prof. Twumasi’s recent call for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and local clubs to construct their own stadiums. He suggested that funds garnered from Ghana’s participation in the 2022 Qatar World Cup could be allocated for this purpose, emphasizing the importance of investing in purpose-built football facilities.
