Today, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, will spearhead a protest against the sale of a 60 percent stake in four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City Hotel, a company owned by Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Food and Agriculture.
Ablakwa, along with Organised Labour and other concerned parties, has raised questions about the process through which Rock City was selected as the buyer.
In a conversation with Citi News, Ablakwa emphasized that the protest aims to compel the government to halt the sale process.
“If Bryan Acheampong has the skills and capability to revitalize hotels, he is already in the cabinet. Why doesn’t he utilize his expertise to improve these hotels for everyone’s benefit?”
“Why should he only apply his skills after acquiring a 60 percent controlling stake, benefiting directly as Rock City’s sole shareholder? How can this be justified? What is his role in the cabinet then? Why are we compensating him?”
Ablakwa further stated that the deal exemplifies government officials’ capture of state resources.
“This is clearly about state capture, which is why we must all take a stand. If the turnout is substantial, and I am confident it will be, we will send a strong message to the president that state capture must end.”
