North Tongu MP and leader of the ‘Hands off our Hotels’ protest, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced a follow-up demonstration to be held in the Central Region.

On June 18, Ablakwa led protesters demanding that the government stop the sale of a 60 percent stake in four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City Hotel, a company owned by the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Ablakwa mentioned increasing calls for another demonstration, especially from the Central Region, where two of the affected hotels, Elmina Beach Hotel and Ridge Royal Hotel, are located.

Ablakwa cited a letter from the Omanhene of the Edina Traditional Council opposing the sale of one of the hotels in Elmina. He warned that a second protest would be inevitable if the president did not address the protesters’ demands to stop the sale.

On June 20, Ablakwa took to Facebook to announce plans for another demonstration in response to appeals from the Central Region.

“I respectfully assure the esteemed chiefs and people of the Central Region, who have called for a patriotic partnership to stage the next #HandsOffOurHotels demonstration, that we are firmly against the sale of Elmina Beach Hotel and Ridge Royal Hotel. We have unanimously agreed to hold another significant protest in the Central Region if President Akufo-Addo does not halt the sales within the next few days,” he stated.
