A Rocha Ghana: Mahama Administration Lacks Direction in Galamsey Fight

‎Daryl Bosu, Deputy Director of environmental NGO A Rocha Ghana, has criticized the Mahama administration for its perceived lack of strategy in addressing illegal mining, also known as galamsey.

‎Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on April 10, Bosu cited the post-election transition period—following Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s concession—as a time when illegal miners took advantage of weakened government oversight to intensify their operations.

‎He claimed both political leaders and security agencies were inactive during this time, allowing galamsey operators to exploit the situation.

‎Bosu expressed deep concern over what he described as worsening conditions on the ground, arguing that no significant progress has been made in addressing the issue.

‎He also criticized the current government for failing to follow through on its previous commitments to environmental protection, especially given its strong criticism of earlier administrations.

‎Bosu questioned whether the Mahama-led government had a concrete plan before assuming office, describing its current approach as lacking clarity and effectiveness.

‎“Everyone expected this administration to perform better than the previous one. But now, they seem directionless,” he said, adding that people on the ground report that the situation is deteriorating with no hope of improvement in sight.
