The Ghana Police Service has removed Bawah Abdul Jalil from his position as leader of the Inspector-General of Police’s (IGP) Special Operations Team, as investigations continue into an alleged assault case involving him and members of the unit.
The development follows accusations that Jalil and some officers under his command were involved in the alleged assault of renowned Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama.
A formal handing-over ceremony was held on April 7, 2026, at the National Police Training School in Accra to mark the leadership transition.
During the ceremony, DSP Jalil officially handed over command to Augustine Dawson Amoah, who assumes the role as the new Commander of the IGP Special Operations Team. Three senior officers will support him to ensure continuity in operations.
In his farewell remarks, DSP Jalil urged personnel within the unit to cooperate fully with the new leadership to maintain operational efficiency and discipline.
Superintendent Amoah, in his acceptance speech, pledged to lead with professionalism and integrity. He emphasized the importance of unity, discipline, and teamwork in executing the team’s mandate.
Authorities have yet to release full details of the alleged assault case, but investigations are ongoing. The outcome is expected to determine any further administrative or legal actions.
The reshuffle signals the Police Service’s effort to uphold accountability and maintain public trust as scrutiny intensifies over the conduct of officers involved in the case.
