Ghanaian doctoral students studying in the United Kingdom have announced plans to stage a protest in London over prolonged delays in the payment of stipends and tuition fees by the Ghana Scholarship Authority.
In a statement issued on April 6, 2026, representatives of the affected PhD cohort revealed that the demonstration is scheduled to take place on April 17 at the Ghana High Commission London.
According to the students, the protest follows months of unsuccessful attempts to engage authorities regarding what they describe as worsening financial hardship among scholarship beneficiaries.
They claim that many students have gone without receiving their stipends for periods ranging between 15 and 40 months, while tuition fees remain unpaid—placing their academic pursuits at serious risk.
The situation, they say, has already led to some students withdrawing from their programmes, while others face possible deportation due to their inability to meet financial obligations required by their universities.
The group also accused the Ghana Scholarship Authority of neglecting students in the UK while continuing to award new scholarships to other countries, including Canada, the United States, Germany, and China.
In addition, they raised concerns over delays in the issuance of renewal letters—documents required for continuing students to register for new academic terms. According to the group, these letters have not been issued for more than 15 months, making it impossible for many students to enrol for the ongoing academic year.
The students argue that despite being eight months into the 2025/2026 academic calendar, the lack of renewal documentation has left them stranded and unable to continue their studies.
With the planned protest, the students are seeking urgent intervention from Ghanaian authorities to address the delays, settle outstanding payments, and ensure the continuity of their academic programmes.
