President John Dramani Mahama has announced an 18-member high-level panel under the Accra Reset Initiative, a major African-led health and economic sovereignty programme aimed at reforming the global health governance system.
According to 3News, the panel has been tasked with developing concrete and actionable proposals to restructure the global health architecture, particularly addressing long-standing concerns that countries in the Global South have often been treated as passive recipients rather than equal decision-makers.
The panel will be co-chaired by four renowned global health leaders:
Peter Piot
El Hadj As Sy
Nísia Trindade
Budi Gunadi Sadikin
Presidential spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu described the initiative as “a fundamental reimagining” of how global health governance should operate in the 21st century.
The panel’s work will be supported by a High-Level Consultative Group that includes leading institutions such as the World Health Organization, World Trade Organization, Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, AUDA-NEPAD, the Global Fund, and the International Finance Corporation.
Other notable members include:
Muhammad Ali Pate
John Nkengasong
Soumya Swaminathan
Additionally, Michel Sidibé has been appointed as Special Advisor to the panel and Envoy of the Co-Chairs.
The consultative group also features global leaders such as Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
This development underscores Ghana’s growing influence in international health diplomacy and President Mahama’s broader push for African leadership in shaping global policy frameworks.
