At least four people have lost their lives following a fatal road crash on the Buipe–Tamale highway, the Ghana National Fire Service has confirmed.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at Sawaba No. 2 and involved a Sprinter Benz bus travelling from Buipe to Kumasi and a trailer truck that reportedly fled the scene after the collision.

According to the fire service, 19 passengers had already been rushed to the Buipe Government Hospital before emergency crews arrived. Firefighters from the Buipe Fire Command subsequently rescued three additional victims who were trapped in the wreckage.

Casualties and response

Four victims—two men and two women—were confirmed dead. Three were pronounced dead at the scene, while one later died at the hospital. The bodies have since been handed over to the police for preservation and further investigation.

The bus involved in the crash sustained extensive damage, with preliminary reports suggesting the trailer driver caused the accident before escaping. Authorities are expected to launch investigations to track down the driver.

Separate fire incident in Ashaiman

In a related development, the Ghana National Fire Service also responded to a domestic fire outbreak at Ashaiman Tulaku near Gulf City Road on the same day.

Firefighters from multiple stations, including Ashaiman, Motorway, Tema Regional Headquarters, and Industrial Area, worked for nearly three hours to bring the blaze under control.

The fire destroyed several wooden structures and damaged six metal containers. However, emergency crews managed to salvage seven metal containers, eight wooden structures, and an ECG pylon. No injuries were reported, and investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

Authorities continue to urge road users to exercise caution while investigations into the fatal crash proceed.
