President Mahama Assents to Five Key Bills Transforming Security, Education, and Finance

President John Dramani Mahama has officially assented to five new bills, marking significant reforms across national security, education, and financial regulation in Ghana.

The assented bills include:

1. Security and Intelligence Agencies Act, 2025 – Introduces reforms in the national security architecture, abolishing the position of Minister for National Security, renaming the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) to the Bureau of National Intelligence (BNI), and empowering the President to designate a minister to oversee the National Security Coordinator.

2. Growth and Sustainability Levy (Amendment) Act, 2026 – Reduces the levy on gold mining companies from 3% to 1%, aiming to encourage investment and sustainability in the sector.

3. University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences Act, 2025 – Establishes a new public university, with Bunsu designated as the main campus, to expand access to higher education in engineering and agricultural sciences.

4. Ghana Deposit Protection (Amendment) Act, 2025 – Strengthens the Ghana Deposit Protection Corporation’s ability to protect depositors in the event of a licensed financial institution’s failure.

5. Education Regulatory Bodies (Amendment) Act, 2026 – Requires all tertiary institutions affiliated with mentoring universities to obtain a charter within six years, ensuring quality and compliance in higher education.
