Mahama announces decentralised teacher recruitment to address rural shortages

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to decentralise teacher recruitment and posting in Ghana as part of efforts to tackle the persistent imbalance in the distribution of educators across the country.

Speaking during an engagement with Civil Society Organisations on March 30, the President noted that the current centralised system has led to a high concentration of teachers in major urban centres, leaving many rural communities underserved.

He explained that under the new policy direction, recruitment and vacancy advertisements will be handled at the district level. This approach is expected to ensure that teachers are deployed based on the specific needs of each district rather than through a nationwide centralised posting system.

According to President Mahama, some major cities, including Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi, will be restricted due to oversubscription, compelling prospective teachers to accept postings in districts where vacancies exist.

He stressed that without such reforms, the challenge of unequal teacher distribution would persist, as many educators continue to prefer urban postings over rural assignments.

The President also acknowledged the backlog of trained teachers and nurses awaiting employment, assuring that government will sustain recruitment efforts to gradually absorb them into the public sector.

The move is seen as part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening Ghana’s education system by improving access to qualified teachers, particularly in underserved and rural areas.
