The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has cancelled plans by staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to organise a “surprise welcome” for him at the Kotoka International Airport following Ghana’s diplomatic success at the United Nations.

In a Facebook post ahead of his return, Mr. Ablakwa said he had been informed of arrangements for a ceremonial استقبال and immediately directed that the event be called off, stressing that the achievement was not personal.

“I have expressed my appreciation to management for their thoughtful gesture and instructed that all such plans to offer me a surprise welcome at the Airport be cancelled immediately,” he stated.

The Minister was part of the delegation led by John Dramani Mahama to the United Nations General Assembly, where Ghana successfully pushed for the adoption of a historic resolution on reparations for the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

The resolution, passed on March 25, 2026, has been widely described as a significant step toward global reparatory justice. President Mahama, upon his return, commended Mr. Ablakwa and the Foreign Affairs team for their extensive diplomatic efforts in securing international support.

Despite the praise, Mr. Ablakwa emphasised that the success belongs to the entire nation and not to any individual, noting that more work remains in advancing Ghana’s global interests.

He also expressed gratitude to staff of the Ministry, describing them as dedicated and talented, while reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to sustained diplomatic engagement on the international stage.
