The Ghana Education Service has directed students not to report to the Accra Newtown Experimental D/A School following a building collapse that has claimed three lives and left 20 others seriously injured.

The directive was announced by the Director-General of GES, Prof Ernest Kofi Davis, after a meeting with security officials at the school on March 30, 2026.

According to him, the Service will hold an emergency meeting to determine the next course of action while safety assessments are carried out. He emphasised that students will remain away from the school until authorities are fully satisfied that the premises are safe for academic activities.

Prof. Davis noted that GES will collaborate with regional and national teams, including the estates department, to inspect the remaining structures and ensure they are fit for use. He warned that any unsafe buildings would be restricted to prevent further risk to students and staff.

The decision follows the recent collapse at the school in Accra New Town, which has raised serious concerns about the safety of educational infrastructure in the area. Authorities say urgent structural assessments are underway to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
