The European Union has issued a strong warning to Ghanaians against being recruited into the ongoing , stressing that the conflict does not involve Ghana and should not claim its citizens.
Speaking at the signing of a security and defence partnership between the EU and on Tuesday, March 24, the Vice President of the European Commission, , condemned the recruitment of Africans by Russia, describing the practice as unethical.
She warned that the war poses significant risks not only to Europe but also to African countries, including Ghana, due to its broader economic consequences.
“Russia’s war is a threat to Europe and also has consequences beyond its borders, including in Ghana. Beyond Russia’s unethical recruitment of African nationals, it places economic hardship on citizens. Your people should not be lured into a war that is not theirs,” Kallas stated.
Her remarks follow earlier disclosures by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, , who revealed that 55 Ghanaians have died in the conflict after allegedly being recruited through criminal networks.
He further indicated that about 1,780 Africans from 36 countries have been trafficked to fight in the war, with approximately 272 Ghanaians believed to have been recruited since 2022. Out of this number, 55 are reported dead, while two are currently being held as prisoners of war.
The warning comes amid growing international concern over the exploitation of vulnerable individuals through illegal recruitment schemes tied to the ongoing conflict.
