Renowned Ghanaian artist has announced plans to pursue legal action following an alleged assault involving members of the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team, popularly known as “Black Maria.”
Speaking at a press conference in Tamale on March 23, 2026, Mahama stated that the decision to take legal action is not only about his personal experience but also about protecting the rights of ordinary citizens.
“It’s not for me, but for everyone else. If this could happen to me, then what about the ordinary person on the street?” he said.
Mahama revealed that the incident left him with serious injuries, including broken teeth, bruised lips, and mouth sores, making it difficult for him to eat or speak properly. As a result, he has been forced to cancel several international engagements.
He was scheduled to travel to the United Kingdom for lectures at institutions including Cambridge, Oxford, and a royal arts institution in London, before continuing to Helsinki, Amsterdam, and South Africa. However, due to his condition, all trips have been postponed.
According to him, the injuries have significantly affected both his health and professional life.
“Currently, it has put my entire life on hold,” he said.
Mahama also expressed broader concerns about alleged misconduct by the Special Operations Team, suggesting that similar incidents may be more widespread.
He warned that such experiences could discourage young people from contributing to national development, particularly if they feel unsafe.
The “Black Maria” unit has denied any wrongdoing, stating that the incident arose from a traffic enforcement situation involving a driver who allegedly refused to comply with police instructions.
The police further released a video showing an individual identified as Mahama’s uncle pleading with officers. However, Mahama rejected the footage, claiming it had been manipulated to influence public opinion.
With both sides maintaining opposing accounts, the case is likely to attract significant public and legal attention as Mahama moves forward with possible court action.
