The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) says it is collaborating with the Ghana Police Service to arrest individuals involved in siphoning fuel from tankers involved in road accidents.

Chief Executive Officer, Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, made this known while speaking to the media on the sidelines of World Consumer Rights Day, noting that the move is aimed at deterring the growing illegal practice.

He expressed concern over what he described as a disturbing trend where individuals rush to siphon fuel anytime a tanker is involved in an accident, a situation that has in some cases led to deadly explosions and the destruction of property.

He cited recent incidents at Nsawam and Gomoa Potsin as examples, warning that such actions pose serious risks to lives and surrounding communities.

According to him, authorities are working with video evidence already obtained to identify and arrest individuals captured stealing fuel from accident scenes, with support from the police, cybercrime units, and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

He stressed that prosecuting offenders will serve as a deterrent and send a clear message that fuel siphoning is both a criminal offence and a dangerous act that can lead to fatal consequences.

Mr. Tamakloe also advised road users to maintain a safe distance from fuel tankers at all times, explaining that both loaded and empty tankers pose different forms of risk and should be approached with caution.
