Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam Nartey GeorgeSam Nartey George, has defended the government’s upcoming SIM registration exercise, stressing that its primary goal is consumer protection and preventing wrongful identification.
Addressing stakeholders, the Minister explained that flaws in the current SIM database have put innocent Ghanaians at risk, including being wrongly linked to criminal activities due to identity theft and data inaccuracies.
He said, “The Minister for Interior, who also serves as Minister for National Security, is pressing us for a credible SIM register. Law enforcement often relies on our records, and with the current system, the wrong people are sometimes apprehended. Some Ghanaians’ Ghana Cards have even been cloned to register SIMs used in crimes.”
Sam George emphasized that the exercise is not driven by procurement concerns but by the need for accuracy, security, and user protection. He noted that the government is focused on creating a reliable system owned by the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the National Identification Authority (NIA) that safeguards users while providing law enforcement with credible data.
He added that the reforms are designed to restore public confidence and ensure that consumers are protected from the consequences of identity misuse. According to the Minister, if implemented properly, this new SIM registration in Ghana will be the final nationwide exercise.
