The Ghana Police Service, through its Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team, has arrested 20-year-old Promise Yayra Asamani for publishing false information about an Uber driver on social media.

The arrest follows a complaint filed on March 11, 2026, by Selasie Kwaku Anthonio, a 43-year-old Uber driver, over a viral Snapchat post that falsely labelled him a “murderer and a thief.”

The post, which included his photograph and vehicle registration number, also alleged that he used signal jammers to disrupt passengers’ connectivity and carried offensive weapons.

According to the complainant, he became aware of the post on March 10 after being alerted by his nephew, Godsway Tetteh. He subsequently received numerous distress calls from family and customers, while his Uber account was blocked, affecting his livelihood. He also expressed fears for his safety due to potential public hostility.

Investigations led to the earlier arrest of Stephanie Asamani, the suspect’s sister, at her residence in Spintex.

During interrogation, Stephanie explained that she had taken a ride with the complainant on March 9 from Spintex to Oyibi. She recounted a series of suspicious events during the trip, which she later shared with her sister.

Police say Promise Yayra Asamani used this unverified account to create and publish the viral Snapchat post on March 11, branding the driver a “killer” without evidence.

After failing to honour a police invitation on March 12, she was arrested on March 14.

During questioning, she admitted that the post was based solely on her sister’s narration and that she had no proof to support the claims.

She has since been granted police enquiry bail on March 16, 2026, as investigations continue.

The Ghana Police Service has cautioned the public against publishing false information, stressing that such acts are punishable under the laws of Ghana.
