Frank Davies, lawyer for former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, says his client will challenge any attempt by authorities in Ghana to extradite him from the United States.
According to Davies, any extradition proceedings initiated to compel Ofori-Atta’s return to Ghana over corruption-related allegations will likely face legal opposition.
The comments follow reports that the former finance minister is seeking permanent residency in the United States instead of returning to Ghana, citing concerns that he may not receive a fair trial.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, March 15, Davies confirmed that steps have been taken toward an extradition request but indicated that the matter would be contested through the legal system.
“The government has put in an extradition request. Following from that will be extradition proceedings. So one way or the other, there is every indication that this matter will be contested,” he said.
Davies suggested that the objective of the extradition move is to secure Ofori-Atta’s return to Ghana to respond to the allegations against him.
“I believe the intention of the extradition is to have Ken removed from the US and be brought down to Ghana,” he added.
Ofori-Atta has recently faced scrutiny over corruption-related claims linked to his tenure as finance minister, although details of the alleged offences and any formal charges have not yet been fully disclosed publicly.
Legal experts note that extradition cases between countries often involve lengthy court proceedings and diplomatic considerations before any final decision is made.
