Pope Leo XIV has called for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East as violence across the region continues to claim lives and displace civilians.

Speaking on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, the pontiff expressed deep concern over the rising death toll and the humanitarian crisis caused by the ongoing conflict.

“For two weeks, the people of the Middle East have been suffering the horrific violence of war. Thousands of innocent people have been killed, and many others forced to abandon their homes,” the Pope said during his address.

He also lamented the destruction of critical infrastructure and the heavy civilian casualties resulting from attacks on schools, hospitals, and residential areas.

Pope Leo XIV extended prayers and solidarity to families who have lost loved ones during the violence and urged leaders involved in the conflict to prioritise peace.

The Pope further highlighted the situation in Lebanon, describing it as a matter of serious concern and calling for dialogue to help the country’s authorities find lasting solutions to the crisis.

Appealing in the name of Christians in the region and people of goodwill worldwide, he urged those responsible for the conflict to agree to an immediate ceasefire and reopen diplomatic discussions aimed at restoring peace.
