Police have arrested a man in his early 20s, Horlali Alatusa, a self-described spiritualist, over the suspected of a woman believed to be his girlfriend at Bentum.
The suspect was apprehended after a farmer in the area reported a strong stench emanating from his farmland.
According to residents, some community members escorted the suspect to the farm on Tuesday, March 10, where they dug a trench believed to have been prepared earlier by him. However, they were initially unable to locate the body.
The matter was subsequently reported to the Ghana Police Service after residents noticed blood clots at the site.
Following further interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed and later led police officers to the location where he had hidden the remains of the unidentified woman.
Police sources indicated that the body had been severely mutilated, with the head and parts of the legs removed.
Residents in the community suspect the killing may have been linked to ritual practices, claiming the suspect was known to have inherited spiritual deities from his father.
Eyewitnesses told Citi News that the deceased was last seen with the suspect in the community on Sunday, after which she could no longer be found, raising suspicions about her disappearance.
Angered by the discovery, some residents destroyed the suspect’s residence in protest.
The remains of the victim have been retrieved by police for further examination, while the suspect remains in custody assisting with investigations.
The incident follows another disturbing case in a nearby community where a newborn baby was reportedly found dead with some body parts removed last week.
Meanwhile, the chief of the community, Nai Bentum, has appealed to authorities to intensify security operations in the area.
He also called for the installation of streetlights along the main road leading to Krodua to improve visibility and enhance safety.
