Okada Rider Arrested Over Robbery at Airport Residential Area

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 24-year-old Okada rider in connection with a robbery incident at the Airport Residential Area, leading to the recovery of two stolen mobile phones.

In a statement issued by the Accra Regional Police Command on Wednesday, March 4, the suspect was identified as Daniel Ashiabi.

The case was reported by the victim, Anneli Niimpungu Amanyanga, who said she was attacked on February 23 while walking towards the Namibia High Commission. According to her account, a man riding a motorbike snatched her handbag containing valuable items, including an iPhone 15 Pro Max worth GH¢19,000 and a Huawei P50 Pro valued at GH¢11,000. The stolen bag also contained her Namibian diplomatic passport, driver’s license, ATM cards, keys, and other personal belongings.

Following the complaint, officers from the Regional Criminal Investigations Department, supported by the Charlie SWAT Unit, tracked the stolen iPhone to Galaway near the Total Filling Station. This led to the arrest of Miracle Asare, a 26-year-old spare parts dealer, and the recovery of the device.

Further investigations resulted in the arrest of two phone dealers, Theophilus Darko, 40, and Benjamin Opoku, 26, both operating at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, who were identified as part of the chain through which the stolen phone passed.

Police later traced the Huawei P50 Pro to Dansoman, where Emmanuel Abangbase, 41, was arrested. He subsequently identified Daniel Ashiabi as the person who sold him the phone.

During interrogation, Ashiabi reportedly admitted to committing the robbery, telling investigators he sold the iPhone for GH¢2,500 and the Huawei phone for GH¢1,000. He also confessed to burning the victim’s diplomatic passport and other documents.

Investigators further revealed that Ashiabi had allegedly been involved in similar robbery incidents in Achimota, Kaneshie, and the Airport Residential Area.

The suspect remains in police custody assisting with investigations, while the other suspects have been granted police enquiry bail.
