The Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission, Nii Moi Thompson, has stirred renewed debate over Ghana’s early political history, claiming that the title “Osagyefo” used by Kwame Nkrumah was originally bestowed on him by the Asantehene.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s programme The Point of View with Bernard Avle on March 4, Dr Thompson rejected the long-held view that there was deep tension between Nkrumah and the Asante Kingdom during Ghana’s early post-independence years.

According to him, historical accounts suggest that Nkrumah admired the bravery of the Asante people, particularly their resistance against British colonial rule. He explained that the title “Osagyefo,” which means “redeemer,” was reportedly conferred on Nkrumah by the Asantehene.

Dr Thompson referenced a book by the late British historian June Milne, noting that Nkrumah later presented the title to his cabinet for approval before officially adopting it.

He also argued that Nkrumah’s relationship with traditional rulers was largely shaped by their support for his national development agenda rather than any inherent opposition to the institution of chieftaincy.

The remarks have revived discussions about the historical relationship between Ghana’s first president and traditional authorities, particularly the role of the Asante Kingdom in the country’s political evolution.
