Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has relocated former Vice-President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for Election 2028, Mahamudu Bawumia, and his wife, Samira Bawumia, from Qatar to a safer country amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Sources indicate that the move was carried out under the direction of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, as part of precautionary measures to ensure their safety.

According to information gathered, Ghanaian diplomatic missions in the region were instructed to prioritise the security of Dr Bawumia and his entourage. Embassy officials reportedly coordinated with host authorities to facilitate smooth and discreet travel arrangements.

The relocation forms part of broader government efforts to safeguard Ghanaian nationals in the region as geopolitical tensions intensify.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, after a virtual meeting with Ghana’s envoys in the Middle East, Mr Ablakwa reaffirmed that no Ghanaian has been killed or injured amid the unrest. The meeting brought together Heads of Mission stationed in Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, and Turkey to assess developments and strengthen consular protection measures.
