The Environmental Protection Authority has seized an additional 1,070 Chanfang machines concealed in separate containers at the Tema Port on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
The latest interception follows a similar operation weeks ago in which more than 200 Chanfang machines were discovered hidden in 14 shipping containers.
EPA officials described the scale of the seizure as alarming, noting that the equipment was reportedly destined for mining districts across the country. The Authority said it has intensified surveillance at the ports as part of efforts to clamp down on environmental degradation linked to illegal and unregulated mining.
The crackdown aligns with the EPA’s broader campaign to protect water bodies from pollution. As part of that initiative, the Authority recently deployed ionic nano-copper technology to treat the heavily polluted River Birim in the Eastern Region, at an estimated cost of $200,000 per kilometre.
Officials maintain that Chanfang machines significantly contribute to the destruction of rivers and other water bodies through illegal mining activities. The EPA has reiterated its resolve to prevent the smuggling and unregulated importation of such equipment into the country.
