Police to Enforce High Court Ban on “Stop Galamsey” Protest

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has declared its intention to strictly enforce a High Court order prohibiting the planned “Stop Galamsey” demonstration scheduled for Friday, February 27, 2026.

The High Court in Accra granted the prohibition order on February 24, citing concerns over public order and safety. Authorities noted that the planned protest clashes with President John Dramani Mahama’s State of the Nation Address (SONA), raising potential security risks.

In a statement issued on February 26, the Accra Regional Police Command dismissed social media claims by the protest conveners that they had not been formally served with court documents. The police maintained that the order was duly served and remains in force.

According to the statement, the prohibition restrains organisers from holding the demonstration on the scheduled date, particularly because it coincides with the SONA proceedings in Parliament.

While the immediate protest has been barred, the police indicated they are open to dialogue with the organisers to agree on a new date. The Command said such engagement would be guided by the Public Order Act and the court’s directives.

The Police Service urged the public to comply fully with the court order and refrain from any actions that could lead to breaches of the peace.
