Armed men have attacked a group of fishermen at sea near Senya Bereku in the Awutu Senya District of the Central Region, firing warning shots and making away with seven outboard motors, generators and other valuables.
The incident occurred during a night fishing expedition, leaving more than 50 fishermen stranded approximately 4,000 metres offshore after their equipment was seized.
Sources indicate that the assailants struck under the cover of darkness, brandishing guns and other weapons. The attackers reportedly held the fishermen at gunpoint for some time and discharged multiple warning shots before carrying out the robbery.
An eyewitness, Elder Samuel Fetteh, told Adom News that the armed men overpowered the crew and executed the operation without resistance, leaving the victims stranded at sea.
The District Chief Executive for Awutu Senya West, Kalala Nyamkye, confirmed the attack and said a rescue boat had been dispatched to bring the affected fishermen safely back to shore.
The Deputy Minister for Works and Housing and Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh, stated that the Inspector-General of Police has deployed personnel from the military and the Marine Police to pursue and apprehend the suspects.
The Ghana Police Service is coordinating efforts to restore security, as the attack has intensified concerns among coastal fishing communities. Residents are calling for increased security patrols to safeguard livelihoods and ensure safety at sea.
