Duncan-Williams Urges Caution Over Election Prophecies

Founder and General Overseer of Action Chapel International, Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has called on prophets to exercise deeper scriptural understanding when addressing political matters, particularly elections.

His remarks follow a public apology by Accra-based preacher Bernard Elbernard Nelson-Eshun, whose widely circulated prophecy predicting victory for Kennedy Ohene Agyapong in a recent internal party contest proved inaccurate. The development reignited debate about the role of prophetic declarations in democratic politics.

Speaking on Channel One TV, Archbishop Duncan-Williams addressed the intense public reactions that often accompany election-related prophecies. He stressed the need to distinguish between Old Testament and New Testament prophecy.

According to him, in the Old Testament era, prophets guided people because the Spirit of God came upon selected individuals temporarily. However, under the New Testament dispensation, believers are led by the indwelling Holy Spirit.

Quoting Revelation 19:10, he noted that “the spirit of prophecy is the testimony of Jesus,” emphasising that genuine prophecy must affirm the Lordship of Christ. He also referenced Hebrews 1:1–2, explaining that while God spoke through prophets in the past, He now speaks through His Son, Jesus Christ, who promised the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of truth.

The Archbishop suggested that controversies surrounding political prophecies often arise from limited biblical grounding rather than a lack of formal education. He observed that prophets in ancient Israel addressed kings installed by God within a theocratic system, which differs significantly from modern secular democracies.

“Our countries and nations are secular. They are not the state of Israel,” he stated, urging discernment when applying biblical prophetic models to contemporary political contests.

While affirming that God still speaks today, Archbishop Duncan-Williams maintained that prophetic ministry in politically sensitive contexts must be exercised with theological depth, wisdom, and responsibility.
