The Ghana Police Service has announced that it will deploy 80 officers to each polling station in the Ayawaso East Constituency ahead of the parliamentary by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026.
Speaking to journalists on February 25, the Deputy Police Commander of the Nima District, Assistant Superintendent of Police Asong Ayrakwa, assured residents of robust security arrangements to ensure a peaceful voting process.
He stated that every electoral area would have about 80 officers stationed to safeguard voters and electoral officials. According to him, additional personnel will also be on standby to respond swiftly to any emergencies that may arise.
The Police have also intensified community engagement efforts across the constituency. Officers are using public address systems mounted on patrol vehicles to educate residents on maintaining peace before, during, and after the election.
Authorities cautioned against acts such as insults, defacing campaign posters, and other behaviours that could escalate into violence, urging constituents to exercise restraint throughout the electoral period.
The by-election was necessitated by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, in January while receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Five candidates are contesting the seat. The National Democratic Congress is represented by Baba Jamal, who drew number one on the ballot paper. The New Patriotic Party candidate, Yussif Baba Ali, secured the third position. Ibrahim Iddrisu is contesting on the ticket of the Liberal People’s Party and occupies the second slot.
Independent candidates Alhaji Mohammed Umar Sanda and David Kannor will appear in the fourth and fifth positions respectively.
