The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory urging Ghanaians to avoid non-essential travel to Mexico due to escalating security tensions in parts of the country.
The advisory follows a major security operation by Mexican authorities on February 22, 2026, which reportedly led to the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as El Mencho and identified as the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
According to the Ghanaian government, the development has triggered coordinated retaliatory attacks by cartel elements across several Mexican states, heightening safety concerns for residents and foreign nationals, including Ghanaians.
The Ministry has therefore advised Ghanaian citizens currently in Mexico to remain vigilant, avoid high-risk areas, and closely monitor local security updates. It also encouraged those planning trips to defer non-essential travel until the situation stabilises.
The advisory underscores government efforts to prioritise the safety and welfare of Ghanaian nationals abroad amid rising international security threats.
