The National Labour Commission (NLC) has obtained an interlocutory injunction against four tertiary education unions over what it describes as an illegal strike action.
The affected unions include the Senior Staff Association – Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU-TUC), and the Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG).
The unions embarked on an indefinite strike on Tuesday, February 3, citing what they described as a unilateral decision by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to alter previously agreed conditions of service.
The industrial action has disrupted activities across several public universities, with the unions demanding the payment of outstanding Tier Two pension arrears and other financial obligations owed to senior staff.
They are also protesting the replacement of overtime allowances with a “call-in allowance,” arguing that the move breaches a 2021 agreement and undermines the rights and expectations of university staff.
According to the NLC, the High Court order, granted on Friday, February 13, 2026, directs the executives, officers, members, agents, servants and employees of the unions to immediately call off the strike and restrains them from continuing the action.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a peaceful and harmonious industrial relations environment in line with Ghana’s labour laws.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, on February 10 appealed to SSA-UoG to suspend the strike following the payment of GH¢396 million in Tier Two pension arrears. He further disclosed that an additional GH¢600 million is being processed and urged the striking staff to respond positively to the government’s appeal.
