A 29-year-old engineer, Charles Amissah, has died after being denied emergency treatment for nearly three hours following a hit-and-run accident at the Nkrumah Circle Overpass in Accra.
Emergency officers from the National Ambulance Service rushed him to the Police Hospital, Greater Accra Regional Hospital and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, but all reportedly refused admission, citing lack of available beds.
Despite receiving first aid and continuous monitoring in the ambulance, no hospital staff attended to him. After prolonged negotiations, Korle Bu advised the crew to proceed to the University of Ghana Medical Centre, but the patient’s condition worsened before he could be transferred.
He later went into cardiac arrest and died despite resuscitation efforts.
Charles, who worked with Promasidor Ghana Limited, was reported missing by his family and only identified days later at the mortuary.
The incident has sparked public outrage over the country’s “no bed syndrome” and renewed calls for urgent reforms in emergency healthcare delivery.
