Two children have tragically lost their lives following a fire outbreak at Deega, a farming community in the Pusiga District of the Upper East Region.

The incident occurred on Monday, February 2, 2026, when the siblings reportedly attempted to roast potatoes inside a thatched structure locally used as a potato barn. In the process, the fire spread rapidly, igniting the dry structure and trapping the children inside.

At the time of the incident, the children’s parents were reportedly outside the compound. After noticing flames and thick smoke coming from the structure, they rushed to rescue the children, but the fire had already intensified, making access impossible.

One of the children died instantly at the scene, while the other was rushed to the Akunye Hospital in Pusiga for emergency treatment. Unfortunately, the second child was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Confirming the incident, a resident of the community and an officer with the Pusiga District Fire Station, Abanga Tahiru, explained that the children were alone inside the structure while their father was outside.

“The children were inside while their father was outside. They lit a fire in the room, which ignited the structure. They could not be rescued in time. One died instantly, while the other died at the hospital,” he said.

The bodies of the deceased children have since been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

The incident has left the Deega community in shock and mourning, while authorities continue to caution residents against allowing children to handle fire or remain unsupervised in structures made of highly flammable materials.
