
Thirty-four suspects arrested in connection with the violent shooting incident at Ahwerease during the Odwira Festival have been charged and arraigned before the Mampong Magistrate Court, according to the Eastern Regional Police Command.
Superintendent Ebenezer Tetteh, the Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the development in an interview on Citi Prime News on Thursday, October 23. He stated that the suspects have been charged with rioting with offensive weapons and causing harm.
The incident occurred during a traditional ritual meant to officially herald the Odwira Festival in the Akuapem South Municipality. A disagreement broke out over who held the rightful authority to perform the ceremony lifting the ban on drumming and noise-making.
The misunderstanding quickly escalated into violence, leading to gunfire that left four people injured. One of the victims, identified as 45-year-old Isaac Nana Kwasi, was pronounced dead on arrival at the KOM Hospital in Aburi.
Superintendent Tetteh explained that all 34 suspects are currently in custody as police investigations continue. He assured that the authorities are committed to ensuring justice and maintaining peace in the area throughout the Odwira festivities.
